Book Spotlight:Remnants of Severed Chains #poetry

Remnants of Severed Chains is a collection of over forty new poems by Kyrian Lyndon, author of A Dark Rose Blooms. This book continues with the same intensity as A Dark Rose, running the gamut of complex emotions that resonate with many. The author explains in the book’s preface that Remnants is about the process of healing and recovery, the willingness to learn and evolve. Thus, she embraces life’s astounding and most personal revelations-afflictions, addictions and relationships, the good and the bad, capturing life’s most devastating moments along with its celebratory moments of beauty and joy. Kyrian’s exceptional handling of language to create vivid images has won her high praise. Rest assured, Remnants of Severed Chains is a uniquely moving experience that readers will enjoy. What I enjoyed most about reading Remnants is how the poems flow into one another with great conviction. The ebb and flow of innocence begins the book. I felt like I was the child seeing and feeling as what is beautifully described in the poems. But that’s only the beginning. Each poem engulfs a new perspective from the eyes of a young woman who feels darkness, light, and victory. I was so happy the book ended on an inspiring note and I look forward to more poetry by Ms. Lyndon.

Favorite #Books Read in 2015

I refer to winter as “reading season.” It’s one of my favorite times of the year although I admit, I miss the sunshine from early fall. When I’m not curled up reading my favorite book, writing my own books and short stories, or working in overnight retail marketing, I’m an overgrown kid. I watch Garfield and Friends or indulge in Nintendo DS gaming. Recently I’ve been thrilled to try Amazon Prime for a month to see if all the hype is worth it-stay tuned-I’ll let you know!

For now, I’d like share a list of great books (not all books, but my favorites) I’ve reviewed this year. When I began this blog I wanted to stick to books under 300 pages. For the most part, I have. However, as time is becoming more constrained I’ll be reading and reviewing more short stories and novellas than ever before.

Also, I want to remind authors who are seeking reviews to > click here < first.

bestbooks400x800

*Please note* the list compiled is in no particular order. Some are recent publications, some are not. I lean heavily toward romantic fiction or genres who incorporate romance into the fiction they write. This list will be updated until the conclusion of 2015, as I continue to read and review.

The Grimm Legacy by Polly Schulman

6760780

Elizabeth has just started working as a page at the New York Circulating Material Repository – a lending library of objects, contemporary and historical, common and obscure. And secret, too – for in the repository’s basement lies the Grimm Collection, a room of magical items straight from the Grimm Brother’s fairy tales. Throw Like a Woman by Susan Petrone

51-xsVAuv7L

Forty years old, divorced, with two sons on the verge of adolescence and an ex-husband who considers visitation to be optional, Brenda Haversham isn’t having a whole lot of fun. She’s also no longer qualified for the work she loves, so she’s toiling away in a cubicle instead, trying to make ends meet. Brenda is short on money, short on connection with her kids, and short on any kind of social life. The only thing Brenda has in abundance is her anger. And that turns out to be her greatest asset.

When she was a kid, Brenda’s father taught her how to throw a good fastball. That wasn’t of much use to a girl, but it is enough to astound onlookers at a “test your speed” pitching cage before a Cleveland Indians game. The more Brenda pictures her ex-husband’s face on the other end, the harder she throws. And when someone tapes her performance and puts it up online, Brenda becomes an Internet sensation – and then more than that.

The Indians come calling and Brenda finds her life taking a turn in a new direction. Soon, she’s standing on the mound as the first woman player in Major League history – and dealing with everything that comes with it. The money is great and the endorsement deals are even better. The fury of “traditionalists?” Not so much. And the conflicting emotions of her teammates are even harder to manage. Meanwhile, Brenda’s home life is evolving faster than she can keep up, redefining her role as a mother, a friend, and even a lover. As the season winds down Brenda will find out if she has what it takes to be a winner – at both baseball and life.

A funny, poignant, and endearing novel from a writer of rare warmth and humanity, THROW LIKE A WOMAN is a 95-mile-an-hour heater of a novel.

Review by @LaurieKozlowski of “The Grimm Legacy” by Polly Shulman #yabooks #amreading #fiction

Elizabeth has a new job at an unusual library – a lending library of objects, not books. In a secret room in the basement lies the Grimm Collection. That’s where the librarians lock away powerful items straight out of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales; seven-league boots, a table that produces a feast at the blink of an eye, Snow White’s stepmother’s sinister mirror that talks in riddles.

When the magical objects start to disappear, Elizabeth embarks on a dangerous quest to catch the thief before she can be accused of the crime or captured by the thief.

Polly Shulman has created a contemporary fantasy with a fascinating setting and premise, starring an ordinary girl whose after-school job is far from ordinary and leads to a world of excitement, romance and magical intrigue.

An Adorable, Magical Story

A book of friendship, young love, and magical adventure reeled me into an exciting story with memorable characters I couldn’t put down for hours.

I most enjoyed the world of the repository, a library of magical objects from older fairy tales, and the dangerous fantasy world. It was brilliant how the objects worked. For instance, a mermaid’s comb would send a young man to his doom if used around busy traffic or near water. There were plenty of villainous suspects to grant The Grimm Legacy a great mystery in juvenile fiction, also.

Wonderful characters! Elizabeth and Aaron had a cute rapport, making them a magnetic set from the start. Marc, Anjali, and Jaya were remarkable in their bonds of friendship and sibling rivalry. Even Marc’s little brother, Andre, made me want to hug him as I envisioned a chubby faced and wobbly little toddler following his big ‘butter’ around.

I’m challenging myself to read a broad range genres and different age group novels to expand my knowledge of what works for certain age groups and audiences and what doesn’t. I can honestly say “The Grimm Legacy” is a fun book most any age reader will enjoy.

Book Escape Review by @LaurieKozlowski of “Razed” by Shiloh Walker #amreading #fiction #romancebooks

A Story with Potential

The cover of “Razed” had perked my interest before flipping this novel over to read the blurb. Yes, I’m a reader who often decides on a novel based on its cover when I’m unsure the blurb completely sells the story to me.

So, I gave “Razed” a chance and bought it just before an after-lunch rush.

First, I want to point out the good things. The cover is delicious. Zach and Keelie were a sweet couple, and they both had their issues, which is what makes a great romance story. They could heat up the sheets–and boy, is that an understatement! If you’re looking for a hot read, you’ll love “Razed.”

Now, I’ll get to why “Razed” didn’t completely win me over. I wanted to love Keelie, the female lead character. I wanted to connect with Zach, the male lead. I WANTED this story to knock my socks off with unbeatable character chemistry and mesmerizing twists in the story…but it didn’t happen for me.
Also, just because this book wasn’t for me isn’t to say a reader who loves intense love scenes throughout a story and situational twists coming later in the story wouldn’t connect with this story.

“Razed” has potential and may suit readers who enjoy off-the-charts hot love scenes and primarily sexual chemistry between two main characters. The minor characters had zest, so I do hope this series continues to evolve.

Cute and Extremely Funny Romantic Comedy

This novella is full of humor, love, and a bunch of over-the-top conversational humor. It is excellent because humor is within the dialogue instead of trying to describe the characters acting funny. So, it truly is a hilarious love story, with believable humor.

Both lead characters grab your heart as you see them transform while diving into this entertaining and lighthearted novella. Kayden is a hero that will steal your heart. He isn’t your average bartender…he’s also an aspiring actor carrying around a tragedy of his own. Julie Ann is a woman many can relate to as she’s given up on her big dreams because of past insecurities. Their shenanigans while meeting Julie Ann’s weird family during the holidays made me howl in laughter. Especially at how snarky and loving her grandmother is in not hiding that she is a cougar, taking on a young lover! Go grandma, go! Lol.

As you can guess, the side characters were also fun to read about. There is a hilarious scene where Kayden is coerced into reciting a scene with Julie Ann’s father – who reads in the nude. I completely lost it and couldn’t stop laughing for several minutes straight.

I recommend this book to anyone wanting a refreshing, funny, book to read with warm and sweet romance. Loved it!

Book Escape Review of The Greatest Gift by Michael John Sullivan #amreading #inspirational #timetravel #fiction

Is there one more miracle left?
Teenager Elizabeth Stewart has been given the gift of life once more and uses it to risk everything for a close friend – even though it means leaving behind her father, Michael.
Distraught, Michael poses as a Roman soldier, takes a sea journey with an Apostle, and is asked to help write part of the Gospel in his quest to safely bring his daughter home to the twenty-first century.
In present time, Hewitt Paul, an embittered FBI special agent, seeks solutions to the mysteries surrounding Elizabeth and Michael’s disappearance.
As faith collides with cynicism and compassion faces off against cruelty, these three people will encounter the unimaginable in ways that alter their lives forever.
Thrilling, illuminating, and ultimately resounding, THE GREATEST GIFT concludes the trilogy begun in NECESSARY HEARTBREAK and EVERYBODY’S DAUGHTER in awe-inspiring fashion.

Book Review of The Greatest Gift

Five Stars * * * * *

Excellent Ending To A Great Series

I’ve been following the When Time Forgets series for a while now and each book has had the unique aspect of being inspirational without having religious overtones. This aspect has kept me reading the series, but also, I have enjoyed reading what Jerusalem and the depictions of people from the Bible, from Mr. Sullivan’s point of view.  In The Greatest Gift, I found myself connected with some characters more than others, but essentially the story was of the same excellent quality of the books before. It included mystery, action, inspiration, and was vividly drawn with words, as the story became increasingly more interesting.

What made The Greatest Gift stand out, to me, was finding out more about Hewitt Paul–a minor character from the series. Though he was not one of my favorite characters, I liked how his vulnerability showed toward the end. My favorite characters, aside from Michael and Elizabeth, would have to be Connie and Susan. I loved Connie’s no-filter approach toward Hewitt…and well, anyone. Susan was lovable in a practical way and was a good friend. Dennis was another great character.

There are two endings to this book. The author lets the reader choose. I’ve never been one to discriminate happy endings, so I chose them both! Great ending to the When Time Forgets series.

ABOUT MICHAEL JOHN SULLIVAN

617499

Michael John Sullivan graduated with a communications degree and a promising future in the field of journalism after working for the official school paper the previous two years. Six months later, he found himself washing his hair in a toilet at the same university as he prepared for a job interview.

Sullivan was homeless at the age of 23 after first watching his mother — his protector in a dysfunctional family — die from cancer. A year later his father asked him to leave. Riding a New York City subway train at night, his only companion was a green plastic bag of belongings. During these bleak days he began writing his most reflective and emotional childhood and adult memories now featured in two of his novels.

On a bitterly cold New Year’s Eve that year, Sullivan intentionally hid under a pew in the back of a church to stay warm for the night. After the doors were locked, he lay near a makeshift manger, writing and talking to the baby Jesus. It was a cathartic experience, one that would continue to resonate with him years later.

He was rescued off the train by an aunt and uncle.

After spending much of the past two decades raising their daughters while working at home, Sullivan returned to his notes in 2007 and began writing Necessary Heartbreak: A Novel of Faith and Forgiveness. It was published by Simon & Schuster’s Gallery Books imprint in April 2010. The Library Journal named Necessary Heartbreak as one of the year’s best in Christian fiction for 2010. He recently finished the sequel, Everybody’s Daughter, featuring more memories from his young adult life, including the day he walked to Forest Park as he contemplated taking his own life. Only the strains of a song prevented him from doing the unthinkable.

Sullivan lives with his family in New York. He is a board member for the Long Island Coalition of the Homeless.
